Expedition: Los Angeles Zoo

The main gate to the LA Zoo

The Los Angeles Zoo is a special place in the animal world. Owned in part by the Los Angeles City government, the Zoo is home to hundreds of species of animals. From elephants to condors, the LA Zoo is a sprawling park that provides visitors with a diverse array of animal encounters.

In particular, the recently-opened, multi-million dollar facility, Living Amphibians, Insects, and Reptiles (LAIR), houses an array of unique reptiles. Run by a tight-knit team of experts, the LAIR offers the public a look into both tropical and desert species. With naturalistic enclosures, visitors feel like they're stepping into the rainforest the moment they walk through the front doors.

A state-of-the-art facility, the LAIR houses reptiles and amphibians from around the world.  From the highly venomous green mambas (Dendroaspis viridis) to trigger fish (Toxotes spp), the LAIR provides stunning exhibits that bring the visitors up close and personal with reptiles, amphibians, and insects.

LA Zoo is one of the few zoos in the US to have Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis). The keeper staff take great pride in their dragons and provide them with gorgeous enclosures with natural sunlight. Over the years, they have pioneered research in the captive propagation of dragons and developed a novel technique to determine the sex of baby dragons even before they hatch.  While there are other zoos with dragons in the country, most of those dragons are offspring from the original breeding pair here at the LA Zoo.
